What is a Society?
Education is more than academic studies. A Society is all about interacting and socialising with other students which in turn relieves the pressures of being buried beneath a pile of economics, chemistry or mechanics books! CIT Societies range from large course related Societies, like Business & Accounting which are run primarily for students within a particular course and provide a great chance to get to know your class on a social level, to college wide Societies like Film, Music and Yoga.
What activities do Societies take part in?
The activities carried out by Societies can range from the organisation of a Table-Quiz to Workshops, Showing Films, trips to various parts of Ireland, Go-Karting, Paintballing or even the very popular 'Faculty Balls'. College can be a stressful experience especially for 1st years and Societies can play an important part in helping you to deal with this.
Why should I join a Society?
Some of the greatest memories students have of their time in College are from getting involved in Societies and attending Societies events. The diversity of CIT Societies means that practically every taste is catered for. College is a time of learning so you shouldn't confine yourself to activities you are already familiar with. Broaden your horizons by joining a Society that the Institute has to offer.
How do I join a Society?
Societies day takes place in September in the Student Centre. This provides an ideal opportunity for all students to sign up. If you have missed this, then look out for upcoming meeting's or events in the What’s On or the Event notices on the home page of this website. You can also join online.
Who operates a Society?
Each Society will elect a new committee early in the first term and if you are interested in becoming involved, please go along to their AGM to put yourself forward or just to see what they are about. First years should try and get involved in a Society at a committee level as this will only help with the continuance of Societies on a yearly basis.
How do I set up a new Society?
Every single Society in the Institute is dependant on the full involvement of its members for its operation, particularly those who are willing to give some of their time to become involved in committee work on behalf of the Society. When setting up a new Society it is important that there is an interest from Students. For more info go to the section on setting up a Society on this website or call in and talk to our Societies Officer, Mervyn O Mahony, in the Student Centre.
